INTRODUCTION
The church of St. Pauls was built on the
side of a hill which overlooks the Aire valley, close to the village of Manningham, a
couple of miles from the town of Bradford, under the shadow of the burgeoning Lilly Croft
Mill. The architects designed the church with a magnificent spire which towers over the
surrounding area like a beacon. Paid for by modest philanthropist John Hollings, it immediately
established itself as a centre for village life.
A church is, of course, much more than the building, and this
celebration must equally address the congregation and the people of Manningham as well as
the church itself.
