Fr. Brian Pierce writes:
The second Letter of Peter reminds us that with the Lord a thousand years is as one day. This means that, so far as the Lord is concerned, St. Pauls has been in existence for about three and a half hours. The same letter, indeed the same verse, tells us that, for the Lord, one day is as a thousand years. In that case, St. Pauls has been around for about 54,750,000 years. This means it was built even before Adam was a lad. Could this be the reason why so much time and effort has to be spent on maintaining the fabric? St. Mary Magdalenes has been around for slightly less time: about three hours or - well, Ill let you work out the years. Were dealing here with the foolishness of God and the so- called wisdom of man. What both churches, in their faithfulness to their own traditions, are here to proclaim is that Gods foolishness is always to be preferred to our imperfect human wisdom. Despite our very different theologies, despite our having sacramental communion with different bishops, we are united in the basic fact that we are here because we have a Gospel to proclaim. It is in that basic commitment that we as St. Mary Magdalenes send our greetings and congratulations to you at St. Pauls on this 150th anniversary of your continuing witness to the Living Lord. May Paul the Apostle to the Gentiles, Mary Magdalene the first witness of the Resurrection, and Blessed Mary the Mother of the Lord and Mother of the Church inspire you by their lives of commitment to the Gospel and sustain you by their prayers before the throne of Him who was and is and is to come, Jesus Christ our Lord
